National Band (Baskur)

Description

The exhibit is a traditional Kazakh ornamented baskur (decorative woven band). The item is made of woolen threads and has an elongated, flat form. It is preserved in a folded state and measures 3 meters in length when fully unfolded. The main color is reddish-brown, with dark-blue geometric diamond-shaped patterns on the surface. Green bands run along the edges of the ornamented section.
Thin cords braided from several threads are attached to both ends of the baskur. The ends of the cords are decorated with tassels made of multicolored threads. The tassels are made by gathering and braiding several strands, leaving the threads loose at the ends, which enhances the decorative appearance of the item.
The item was made using the terme weaving technique on a traditional loom, with alternating multicolored threads. Traditionally, the baskur was used in Kazakh yurts to secure the area where the roof poles and lattice wall meet, as well as to decorate the interior.
