Description
The 1897 silver 50-kopeck coin was minted during the reign of Tsar Nicholas II of the Russian Empire. The obverse features a profile portrait of Nicholas II, with the inscription “B.M. Nikolai II Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias” around the rim. The reverse displays the fifth type of the Russian Empire’s coat of arms, with the inscription “50 kopecks, 1897” below.
The edge inscription reads “Chistogo serebra 2 zolotnika 10.5 doli,” indicating the silver content of the coin. The mintmark is a star (*), which shows that it was struck at the Paris Mint (Monnaie de Paris). The coin has a soldered loop attached, suggesting that it was later repurposed as a button.
