Set of Decorative Tumar Amulets

Description
The set consists of two decorative tumar amulets of elongated diamond-shaped form. Each object is made of dense red silk fabric with a wide border of glossy golden decorative material. The central area features a complex applied ornament resembling a stylized vegetal motif or an interpretation of traditional Kazakh ornamental design. A faceted decorative stone is attached to the upper part of the central composition; one amulet has a blue stone and the other a red one. The objects were handmade using cutting, sewing and appliqué techniques. They were produced in Kazakhstan in 1990 by craftswoman R. Balzhigitova. The set represents a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Kazakh protective amulet.
