Description

Accidentally discovered on March 21, 1972, in the area of Groznensky Street in Zhambyl. The chilim is a smoking device. It is shaped like a water jug with a spout and a narrow cylindrical neck that widens toward the top. On the opposite side of the neck are short horns and ears, as well as a beak ending in an animal head. The ears are pierced, while the eyes are made of buttons. A hook-shaped handle connects the neck to the spout. Unlike watering jugs, these vessels have two cylindrical outlets on either side of the neck, with grooves at the top, which, according to scholars, were intended for burning ancient charcoal. Cigarettes are placed into the neck-like opening of the vessel filled with water. The tobacco smoke, having passed through the water, is inhaled by the smoker through an opening in the animal head.
