Kerege (the walls of the yurt)

Description

Kerege is the lattice-like wall of a traditional yurt that can be stretched open and folded closed. It forms the main structure of the yurt and serves as a support for the roof poles (uyq). Kerege is made from flexible and durable willow wood.The wooden slats cross each other in an X-shape, forming diamond-shaped openings. At each crossing point, the slats are pierced and fastened together with leather straps. Because of this flexible fastening, pulling the kerege from both sides makes it stretch and become longer, while folding it makes it shorter and compact. In other words, it opens and folds like an accordion.
