Aba’s House-Museum
The Abai House-Museum is a memorial institution of scientific, cultural, and historical significance that offers a comprehensive insight into the life and creative legacy of the great poet, thinker, and educator of the Kazakh people - Abai Kunanbayev. The museum is located in the Zhidebai tract of the Abai District in East Kazakhstan Region, 180 kilometers from the city of Semey and 25 kilometers from the district center - the village of Karauyl. This historical site was established in 1945 by a decision of a special state commission of the Government of Kazakhstan on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Abai. It was organized on the basis of the winter residence in Zhidebai where the poet lived. This initiative was part of a broader cultural revival and reflected the processes of national spiritual awakening at the time.
The architectural design of the museum house has been restored with attention to preserving the everyday features of Abai’s era. The general layout includes five rooms and three exhibition halls. Most of the exhibits presented in these spaces are authentic items and documents collected from the poet’s descendants, relatives, contemporaries, and friends. The exhibition materials reveal various aspects of Abai's life - his family life, creative work, public engagement, and educational efforts.
The interior of the house is organized around a long corridor with rooms branching off. The first door on the left leads to the kitchen - a spacious and bright room with a window facing east. At the right threshold of this room are two rare ethnographic items typical of traditional Kazakh life: an asadаl (a cupboard for dishes) and a small kebezhe (decorated chest) adorned with silver, copper, and bone ornamentation. Historical records indicate that these valuable artifacts were personally donated by Abai Kunanbayev to the Semipalatinsk Regional Museum in 1885. This fact highlights that even in his time, the great poet recognized the importance of museology and cultural preservation, contributing to the renewal of public consciousness.
The primary mission of the Abai House-Museum is to preserve and transmit Abai’s legacy to future generations, systematically study and promote his spiritual and cultural heritage. To this end, the institution conducts scientific and educational work in various directions: it organizes permanent and traveling exhibitions, literary and cultural events, scientific-practical conferences, and educational excursions for schoolchildren. The museum's collections include documents, rare books, manuscripts, household items, and photographic materials related to Abai and his era.
The Abai House-Museum holds a special place in the system of national heritage not only as a repository of memory about a great personality but also as an institution preserving the historical memory of the entire Kazakh nation. It stands as an outstanding symbol of Kazakh spirituality, culture, literature, and history - with significance extending to the international level.
