Pioneer. Portrait of A. Kasteyev

Description

Author: Yerzhanov, Mels. 1931-1992
A formal portrait of a middle-aged man set within an interior. Standing beside a table draped in a red tablecloth, he holds a book inscribed “Kasteyev”, his gaze directed to the left. A scarlet Pioneer neckerchief is tied around his neck, and a vase of red tulips rests on the table. Executed in the Soviet realist portraiture tradition, the work captures key hallmarks of Kazakhstani painting from that era.The painterly style features broad, generalized forms with minimal fine detail, while the chiaroscuro modeling of the face and hands follows an academic approach.
