Pioneer Agitator Girl

Description

Author: Lizogub, Maria. 1909-1998
A genre composition depicting an interior scene. Gathered on a carpeted floor is a group of figures: on the left sit two elderly women in traditional headdresses (kimeshek); in the center, slightly behind, sit a young girl and a man wearing a chapan and a fur hat (borik); on the right sits a girl reading a newspaper aloud, drawing the attention of all the characters. Executed in oil in a realistic manner, the faces and figures are densely modelled, while the interior is broadly rendered under subdued lighting. The warm color scheme relies on deep brown-ochre and reddish tones, with the illuminated faces and the white headdress on the left softly emerging in subtle contrast. The scene of people reading a newspaper unveils the themes of enlightenment and literacy characteristic of the art of its era.
