A half-length portrait of Abai Kunanbaev (1845-1904), the great Kazakh poet, thinker, and educator, depicted turned three-quarters against a neutral ochre-yellow background. Seated with his gaze directed toward the viewer, he wears a skullcap and a light chapan with a purple-pink trim draped over a dark beshmet, holding a small blue-covered book in his right hand. Rendered in pastel on toned paper, the work adheres to the realistic manner of the academic tradition: the face and hands are articulated in detail, while the clothing and background are treated with generalized simplicity. The color scheme is restrained, built on harmoniously blended warm tones.
