Aqsuyek (Traditional Kazakh Game)

Description

Author: Nurzhumayev, Oralbek. 1938-1996
A genre composition depicts the traditional Kazakh game “Ak Suyek” against the backdrop of a hilly steppe and a dark night sky with a crescent moon, where young men and women stand in a semicircle with raised hands awaiting the throw. Seated on the ground at the left are a girl in a white dress and a young man with a dombra. The frieze-like structure and cohesive movement of the figures convey the festive atmosphere of a nighttime youth gathering, evoking a sense of carefree enthusiasm. The forms are generalized without detailed elaboration. The palette relies on deep blue-violet sky tones and ochre-brown earth tones, punctuated by the light and red accents of the clothing.
