A genre composition centered on the theme of labor, depicting in a close-up plan a barefoot worker seated on the ground amidst gravel. In his right hand he holds a large stone, in his left a hammer; beside him sit his discarded shoes, with small stones scattered around. A dark jacket, light shirt, and cap are rendered in large generalized planes, as the subject is bent intently over his work, completely absorbed in the task. The color scheme is built upon muted grey-violet, ochre, and whitish tones, where a broad impasto brushwork conveys both the texture of the stone and the strain of heavy physical labor
