Balkhash Under Construction

Description

Author: Laptev, Alexander. 1934-2011
An urban landscape rendered in a free, study-like manner. The composition is structured by a gray asphalt road sweeping from the lower edge toward the left and into the depth of the scene, along which two trucks move, establishing spatial scale and rhythm. On the left and in the far background, multi-story buildings under construction rise on the horizon. The high, clear sky and the sweeping curve of the road emphasize the spaciousness of the city’s outskirts. A restrained, muted color palette combined with a generalized painterly handling faithfully conveys the tranquil, everyday atmosphere of a growing city.
