East Kazakhstan Regional Architectural-Ethnographic and Natural-Landscape Museum-Reserve
The East Kazakhstan Regional Architectural and Ethnographic Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a unique cultural and scientific institution not only within the Republic of Kazakhstan but also across the entire post-Soviet space. The main mission of the museum-reserve is the comprehensive and interdisciplinary study, preservation, and promotion of the traditional culture of the peoples of East Kazakhstan as an integral part of the cultural heritage of the peoples of Kazakhstan.
The museum-reserve was established in 1990 with the aim of systematically studying and preserving the historical and cultural heritage of the various ethnic groups inhabiting East Kazakhstan. It is the first and, to date, the only multi-disciplinary museum institution of its kind in the country. Its structure includes traditional museum exhibitions as well as architectural-ethnographic and natural-landscape sites.
The main facilities of the museum complex include:
Three museum halls located in historical buildings - architectural monuments dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries;
An open-air ethnographic complex located in the “Zhastar” ("Youth") ethnopark, which features 14 examples of vernacular architecture;
The Left Bank Ethnographic Complex, covering an area of over 100 hectares, where dwellings and traditional household structures of 16 ethnic groups living in East Kazakhstan are recreated;
Cultural and recreational facilities such as Zhambyl Park of Culture and Leisure, the "Strelka" Children's Park, the "Blue Lakes" Family Recreation Zone, the historical and cultural park "Silk Road", the artisan center "City of Masters", a zoo, and a botanical garden - all of which perform cultural, educational, and recreational functions as part of the museum-reserve.
The museum's collection includes over 60,000 unique artifacts reflecting the cultural diversity and everyday life of more than 40 ethnic groups in the region. The collection features yurts, traditional clothing, items of applied art, samples of wood and metal carving, household items, as well as documents and photographs.
The museum-reserve actively develops international scientific and cultural cooperation. Traveling exhibitions organized by the institution have been successfully presented in South Korea, China, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, Poland, India, Iran, Israel, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan.
Modern museum technologies are being actively implemented within the institution: digitization of collections, the use of QR codes, virtual tours, and interactive exhibitions. Educational programs for schoolchildren and students, scientific conferences, master classes, and cultural events dedicated to national holidays are regularly organized.
