Fragment of a coin of the Ruler Vakhshutava (Turgesh Khaganate)

Description

A fragment of a coin with a square hole in the center. The coin has a convex rim along the edge. A rim also surrounds the central hole. The obverse features a circular Sogdian legend in cursive, written counterclockwise. The Sogdian legend “xwt’w w’xswt’wy pny” (Kamyshev, 2002) means “Coin of the ruler Vakhshutawa.” Tamga of the Turgesh people, with the runic sign “r” on the left and the Chinese character for yuan below, meaning “current coin.” The rim is linear.
