Coin of the Turgesh Khaganate

Description

The coin is round with a square hole in the center. The coin has a raised rim, 3 mm thick, around the edge. The central hole also has a rim, 1 mm thick. The obverse features a circular Sogdian legend in cursive, written counterclockwise. The Sogdian legend reads “xst ´w ´ xswt´ wy pny.” The reverse features the Türgesh tamga, inscribed within the coin’s margin between the thick, linear rim and the square hole. The square hole is outlined by a diamond, as part of the tamga. To the right of the tamga is a Turkic monogram. Above is the Sogdian legend in cursive script, “Vuu” – “Divine.” This is the epithet of the Türgesh Khagan.
