Abacus

Description

This abacus belonged to the renowned Kazakh composer Mukan Tulebayev and was used by him in 1934 while working as an accountant in the village of Ülgi. The device consists of a wooden frame with metal rods strung with stone beads for manual calculations.
The abacus features 13 metal rods, bearing a total of 28 black and 96 yellow stones. This artifact provides insight into early 20th-century office tools and reflects an important phase in Tulebayev’s life before he fully devoted himself to music.
