National Band (Baskur)

Description

The exhibit is a traditional Kazakh ornamented baskur (decorative woven band). The item is made of woolen threads and has an elongated, flat shape. Its main color is dark reddish-brown, with geometric and spiral patterns woven from black, bluish, and light-colored threads. The edges of the ornamental composition are bordered with black stripes.
At both ends of the item, there are long cords braided from several threads. The ends of the cords are finished with decorative tassels, made by gathering, intertwining, and securing threads together.
The baskur was made using the terme weaving technique on a traditional loom, with alternating multicolored threads. Traditionally, it was used in Kazakh yurts to secure the area where the roof poles (uyk) and lattice walls (kerege) meet, as well as to decorate the interior of the dwelling.
