Wooden serving dish (astau)

Description

A traditional Kazakh astau, a wooden vessel used for serving food. The object was hand-carved from a single piece of wood. It has an oval shape with flat, smoothly rounded edges and a deep interior. The bottom is slightly recessed. The surface retains the natural light-yellow colour of the wood. Traces of handwork with an axe and chisel are visible on the inner surface.
