Pavlodar Regional Historical and Local History Museum named after Mr. Potanin

The Pavlodar Regional Museum of History and Local Lore is a cultural center focused on the comprehensive study and promotion of the region's history and culture. The museum was established in 1942 on the basis of the regional branch of the "Society for the Study of Kazakhstan." In 1959, it was named after the renowned traveler, ethnographer, and researcher of Central Asia, Grigory Nikolayevich Potanin. The founder of the museum was the photographer and local historian Dmitry Polikarpovich Bagaev.

Today, the museum’s exposition is housed in 12 thematic halls that cover the historical and cultural development of the Pavlodar Irtysh region from ancient times to the present. The institution also includes a scientific library and six branches: the D.P. Bagaev House Museum, the M. Shamsutdinova Museum of Song Creativity, the Museum of Military Glory, the KGP “Ekibastuz Museum of History and Local Lore,” the KGP “Aksu Museum of History and Local Lore,” and the KGP “Sharbakty Museum of History and Local Lore.” Additionally, there is an open-air museum operating as part of the institution.

The main exposition is located in a historic building from the late 19th century - formerly the trading shops of merchant of the first guild A. Derov, now recognized as an architectural monument. The administrative and research departments are housed in the former post and telegraph office. The main storage facility is located at 129 Lenin Street, also a building of architectural heritage status.

One of the museum’s greatest points of pride is its scientific collection. Currently, the main depository contains more than 105,000 items. The collections are continuously replenished and undergo systematic scientific processing. Among the museum’s scholarly publications is the catalog "Archaeological Collections of the Pavlodar Regional Museum of History and Local Lore". A consolidated catalog titled "Rare and Valuable Artifacts of District Museums in Pavlodar Region" is currently in preparation. One of the museum’s key areas of focus is scientific research. Staff members develop thematic lectures on regional history, paleontology, archaeology, and ethnography, and implement projects such as “I Want to Visit the Museum!” and “Urban Studies.” The museum regularly hosts seminars and training sessions for employees of departmental and public museums, involving experts from the Museum of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The museum also provides methodological and organizational support to other museums in the region. In addition, the museum organizes traveling exhibitions, lectures, creative evenings, and concerts based on its own and national collections. As part of the inter-museum regional project “The History and Culture of the Irtysh Region,” exhibition exchanges with other museums across Kazakhstan are carried out.

Each year, in honor of International Museum Day, the cultural project “Night at the Museum” is held. It features theatrical tours, historical fair reconstructions, and performances by creative groups. The museum also offers master classes, local history lessons, lecture-concerts, as well as archaeological and ethnographic expeditions, the results of which are studied and prepared for exhibition.
