Description
Description:
The keli (mortar) and kelsap (pestle) are made from various types of wood, such as black willow, oak, and mulberry. Craftsmen usually harvest the wood for making the keli during dry years. The selected tree is dug out with its roots before winter, when it is rich in nutrients, and then thoroughly dried. Once the wood is completely dry, artisans begin carving the keli.
To make it strong and durable for many years, both the inside and outside are coated with sheep tail fat or camel fat. Since the wood can still crack over time, the lower part is reinforced with iron. A handle is added for convenient use.
