Cultural and Leisure Center

The District Historical and Local Lore Museum operates under the Municipal State Treasury Enterprise “Cultural and Leisure Center” of the Department of Culture, Physical Culture and Sports of the Akimat of May District.
The main objectives of the museum are to promote the history of the district, collect and systematize relevant information, carry out restoration of archaeological exhibits, organize local traveling exhibitions, and protect the natural environment.
The museum is located on the second floor of the District House of Culture and consists of two rooms. It was opened in 2013 as an independent legal entity - the Municipal State Treasury Enterprise “Historical and Local Lore Museum.” In 2018, as part of an optimization process, the museum was transferred under the authority of the Municipal State Treasury Enterprise “Cultural and Leisure Center” of the Department of Culture, Physical Culture and Sports of May District.
The museum exhibition consists of two halls:
Hall 1 - the history of the district;
Hall 2 - the nature and natural resources of the region.
The first hall presents materials on the history of May District, including the period of its establishment, the construction of the district center, and information about collective farms of that time. Photographic materials of the district leaders are displayed.
There are also materials about residents of the district who went to the front and those who did not return during the years of the Great Patriotic War.
Separate exhibitions are dedicated to a native of May District, Hero of the Soviet Union Makhmet Kairbayev, and Holder of the Orders of Glory Kadyrgaly Buldubaev.
Photographic materials illustrating changes in the district during the Virgin Lands campaign are presented, along with information about active citizens who made a significant contribution to the development of agriculture.
A special corner is dedicated to soldiers who died in the Afghan War.
The exhibition also reflects the development of education, culture, and sports in the district.
Materials on the activities of the Nevada-Semey movement in the district are displayed.
The museum features information corners dedicated to notable natives of the district: academician Zhabaykhan Abdildin, People’s Artist Shakhan Musin, poet Nurlybek Baimuratov, and kuishi Baigabyl Zhylkybayev.
An exhibition is devoted to the sacred sites of the district, including the mausoleums “Akbalyk Gaziret”, “Makat Kazhy”, the “Kalmak Kyrilgan” Mountains, and “Kaisa Ata.”
The second hall displays exhibits related to the nature of the district, its wildlife, scenic views along the Irtysh River, natural resources, and archaeological artifacts.
The museum collection consists of 2,156 exhibits, including a copper jug made in the 18th century, a rhinoceros vertebra, and leg bones of the Hipparion animal.
Museum opening hours:
Monday to Friday - 09:00 a.m. to 06:00 p.m.
Days off - Saturday and Sunday.
Admission to the museum is free of charge.
