Shark Tooth

Mangistau Regional Museum of History and Local Lore named after A. Kekilbayev

Shark Tooth. This is a tooth from a lamnoid shark, specifically from the family Carcharhinus. Odontology (the name of the tooth structure). Time of distribution - Pleistocene epoch. The teeth are large, capable of tearing through flesh, with the root and crown portion distinctly visible; this tooth is characteristic of the lateral teeth in the upper jaw. This tooth belongs to that category. The base of the tooth is flat and resembles an isosceles triangle in shape. The edge of the crown is curved along its entire length, indicating its adaptation for tearing. The root is straight and narrows towards the base. In lamnoid sharks, the teeth are clearly differentiated into anterior, intermediate, lateral, and posterior types. The main part of the tooth consists of the root and the crown.
