Description
This dombra belonged to the famous poet and akyn of the Zhetysu region, Kul Akyn (Kulmukhammed Balgazhauly), who was among the first to establish a national orchestra of traditional instruments. A master of both poetry and performance, he played a significant role in Kazakh musical heritage.
The most distinctive feature of this dombra is its crescent-shaped headstock. This shape reflects Kul Akyn’s adherence to the Sufi branch of Islam. In Sufi philosophy, the crescent symbolizes spiritual purity, enlightenment, and divine harmony. As such, this dombra is not only a musical instrument but also a spiritual artifact that embodies the worldview of its owner.
