Button is a widely распространён decorative and applied art object in traditional Kazakh jewelry craftsmanship. It was used as an ornamental fastener that joined the two fronts of a garment, serving both functional and decorative purposes. Buttons were mainly made of precious and semi-precious metals such as gold, silver, and copper, and were decorated with ornamental patterns, gemstones, as well as techniques including granulation, blackening, and embossing.
The buttons preserved in the museum collection date back to the 19th-20th centuries. The size, shape, and decoration of the buttons varied depending on the wearer’s age, gender, and social position.
As an integral part of the traditional national costume, these museum buttons possess significant historical and cultural value and serve as an important source for the study of the material culture of the Kazakh people.
