Fragment of a tablet

National Central Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Fragment of writing. 2nd century BC – 4th century AD. Rectangular in shape, the side parts at the bottom are smooth, finished with a yellowish-brown slip. The inscriptions are three lines long, with twenty-two signs on the front surface, etched into the wet clay before firing (some are only partly legible). The text is written in an ancient Aramaic alphabet.
Date: 2nd century BC – 4th century AD.
Place of origin: the settlement of Kultobe. Southern Kazakhstan.
Material: ceramics, molding.
Technique: firing, inscribing.
Size: length – 10 cm, width – 4.8 cm, thickness – 5.5 cm.
