Description

The harness is an important element of horse equipment that plays a significant role in the daily life of both nomadic and settled Kazakhs, especially in freight transport and agriculture. This artifact is a valuable testament to the technologies of leather processing, weaving, and the making of horse gear employed by Kazakh artisans in the early 20th century, as well as the level of traditional transport links of that era.

The artifact represents an oval-shaped harness (kamyt) designed for harnessing a horse to a vehicle (cart, sled), with soft internal padding and covered with black leather on the outside. The cushion of the harness (the inner side): to prevent chafing the horse’s neck and shoulders, it is filled with wool/hair and stitched quite tightly. The wooden base of the harness (ring): the inner curved wooden parts, which bear the main load, are fully covered with leather, and the edges are stitched with strong light leather thread. The ends of the harness and supone: a strong rope (supone) is used to tie the lower open ends of the harness to each other. On the sides, there are leather ears (guzhi) that are fastened to the shafts (frames) of the sled or cart.
