Shakshak Zhanibek Historical Museum
The Shakshak Zhanibek Museum is a cultural and educational institution that forms an important part of Kazakhstan’s spiritual and historical heritage. It is dedicated to the life and legacy of one of the most prominent figures of the 18th century - Zhanibek Koshkaruly, a statesman, military leader, just bi (judge), diplomat, and peacemaker from the Argyn clan of the Middle Zhuz.
The museum was opened in 2009 in the village of Tasty, Amangeldi District, Kostanay Region. Its creation was a significant step within the framework of the national cultural policy aimed at restoring historical justice, preserving cultural heritage, and honoring the memory of national heroes. The opening of the museum was made possible through the efforts of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Akimat of Kostanay Region, as well as local philanthropists and public figures.
The museum building was constructed with consideration for traditional Kazakh architecture. The interior design is modeled after the national dwelling - the kiyiz ui (yurt), creating an immersive and historically authentic atmosphere for visitors. The museum’s exposition is divided into several key sections:
1. The Life and Legacy of Shakshak Zhanibek Koshkaruly - This section presents Zhanibek bi’s biography, his role in strengthening Kazakh statehood, his heroic resistance against Dzungar invasions, participation in the khanate governance system, and diplomatic relations with the Russian Empire and other political entities. His legacy as a bi and orator is highlighted through his fair judicial decisions and oral traditions that have survived in folklore.
2. Kazakh Society and Military Structure in the 17th-18th Centuries - This section features rare artifacts, models, and maps illustrating the political, social, and military organization of Kazakh society during that period. The exhibition includes various types of weaponry, armor, warriors’ uniforms, and materials on battle tactics.
3. Local History Hall - This hall presents ethnographic and historical information about the village of Tasty and the Amangeldi District, including everyday life, culture, archaeological finds, photographs, and details about sacred sites associated with Zhanibek bi, his descendants, and followers.
The museum’s collection contains over 1,000 items of significant historical and cultural value. These include original historical documents and photographs; ethnographic objects (Kazakh household items, national clothing, jewelry); archaeological and numismatic specimens; traditional weapons (swords, spears, shields, bows); fine art pieces and portraits of Zhanibek bi. All artifacts are scientifically cataloged, registered in inventory books, and have undergone official documentation and certification.
The Shakshak Zhanibek Museum serves as a center for patriotic education, helping to foster historical awareness and respect for national heroes. It plays an important role in educating young people and promoting a deeper understanding of the formation of Kazakh statehood. The museum meets the cultural and historical interests of local residents, students, schoolchildren, and researchers.
