Museum of History of the Sarkand District

The museum belongs to the historical and local lore profile. It covers the nature of the Sarkand region, its ancient history, ethnography, and modern history. In addition, the museum has a well-developed memorial focus, as it was established based on the events of the “Cherkassy Defense” that took place in the district during the Civil War.
By decision of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR, the new exhibition of the Museum of History of the Sarkand District was placed in a building constructed in 1978 in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Cherkassy Defense. In accordance with the decision of the Ministry of Culture of the Kazakh SSR dated January 1, 1968, the museum was opened in a building that housed the Military Council during the years of the Civil War.
At present, this building accommodates an exhibition complex dedicated to the Cherkassy Defense. The number of facilities on the museum’s balance sheet is 2 (two).
1. The “Cherkassy Defense” Exhibition Complex - a building constructed in 1910, which was used as a military headquarters in 1918-1919. It underwent major restoration in 2017.
2. The Memorial Complex, erected in memory of the fallen and surviving defenders, was opened on July 12, 1973. The project authors were architects Timur Suleimenov and Almaz Ordabayev.
The museum exhibition consists of three sections:
1. History of the District up to 1917
2. History of the Region during the Soviet Period (1917-1991)
3. The Region during the Years of Independence (since 1991)
Section 1 is dedicated to the ancient settlement of Koylyk (12th century), the former capital of the Karluk Khaganate; two major battles against the Dzungars on the territory of Zhetysu - the Battle of Orbulak (1643) and the Battle of Anrakai (1729); Russian peasants who resettled along the banks of the Sarkand River (1858); as well as the leaders and participants of the national liberation uprising of 1916.
Section 2 tells about the participants in the establishment of Soviet power in Zhetysu, the participants of the Civil War (1918-1919), the consequences of collectivization policies in the history of the region, the life and work of an outstanding figure of the Alash movement - the first Kazakh railway engineer Mukhamedzhan Tynyshbayev (1879-1937), veterans and participants of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), as well as cultural and artistic figures of the Sarkand District.
Section 3 is dedicated to historical events that have taken place in the district from 1991 to the present day. It also presents household and economic items of the Kazakh and Russian peoples of the 20th century, as well as materials about well-known personalities and natives of the district.
The Most Valuable Exhibit in the Museum Collection
