The action unfolds against the backdrop of dark tree foliage and a twilight sky. The colour scheme is built on the contrast between the warm ochre-brown tones of the figures and the deep blue-green shadows of the surroundings. A dense, generalized painterly style and the motif of offering refreshment to the horseman reveal themes of family and everyday life.
