Author: Kasteyev, Abylkhan. 1904-1973
A portrait of Chokan Valikhanov-an outstanding Kazakh scholar-enlightener, traveler, and officer-rendered in a realistic style. In the foreground, seated on a pile of stones, is a mustached man in the military uniform of a staff rittmeister; his right elbow rests on his knee, supporting his chin, while his left hand holds a book, a symbol of his scholarly endeavors. His pensive posture and distant gaze evoke the image of a profound thinker. In the background are mountains and a lake; to the right in the distance, yurts and human figures are visible. The color scheme is built on a restrained combination of the muted grey-green tones of the uniform and rocks with the soft blue of the mountains and lake. The meticulous painting technique with detailed execution and emphasis on the sitter’s psychological depth align the work with the tradition of the realistic historical portrait. At the lower left - signature and date.
