An early spring landscape features a small river with dark water in the foreground, its banks showing patches of melting snow that expose the brown earth, with a wooden plank bridge spanning the channel. Visible in the distance is a haze-shrouded strip of trees set against gentle hills, topped by a gray, overcast sky. Executed in a plein-air study manner with soft, generalized brushstrokes, the contours dissolve into the moist atmosphere. The palette conveys the atmosphere of a thaw, built on closely related gray-white, ochre, and bluish tones. At the lower left – signature.
