Mukhit Meraliyev Historical and Local Lore Museum

The Mukhit Meraliyev Museum of History and Local Lore is a structural subdivision of the West Kazakhstan Regional Museum of History and Local Lore and plays an important role in preserving and promoting the cultural and historical heritage of the Karatobe district. This regional cultural institution has a history spanning nearly 50 years.

The museum was founded in June 1974 on the initiative of the renowned writer and public figure Berkayir Amanshin. In its early stages, local historian Maral Kazhigereev played a significant role in the museum’s development-he was the first director and was actively involved in organizing the institution’s work. Due to a lack of facilities, the museum was temporarily housed in a school building. It was not until October 1990 that the Karatobe District Museum of History and Local Lore was officially opened and began operating at a new level. The opening ceremony was attended by the prominent linguist, Doctor of Philology, and Professor Matzhan Tileuzhanov.

In 2003, a new purpose-built facility was constructed for the museum and equipped in accordance with modern requirements. Since then, the museum has been fully functioning as a professionally organized exhibition space, providing services to both residents and visitors of the region.

Currently, the institution consists of four main exhibition halls:

1. Nature Hall - introduces the natural wealth of the Karatobe region, including local flora and fauna. The exhibition features archaeological finds from the Akkum area, as well as models of animals and birds.

2. History of the Junior Zhuz Hall - provides information about the lifestyle, ethnographic characteristics, and historical processes of the Kazakh people in the 18th-19th centuries. The exhibit includes samples of folk arts and crafts, household items, and historical photographs.

3. Art Hall - reflects the life and achievements of prominent figures in the arts, science, and education who originated from the Karatobe district. The hall contains documents and materials about local individuals who have made significant contributions to cultural and educational development.

4. Egemen (Independence) Hall - dedicated to veterans of the Great Patriotic War, participants in the Afghan War, sports achievements, and the history of independent Kazakhstan. It features materials, photographs, and documents highlighting key stages in the country’s modern development.

The Mukhit Meraliyev Museum of History and Local Lore is not only a witness to the past, but also an important institution fulfilling the mission of shaping historical awareness among the younger generation, fostering patriotism, and promoting the spiritual and cultural potential of the native land.
