The Syrymbet Historical and Ethnographic Museum named after Shokan Ualikhanov

The Shokan Valikhanov Historical and Ethnographic Museum in Syrymbet is a memorial complex that plays a significant role in researching and preserving the cultural and historical heritage of Kazakhstan. The museum is located in the village of Syrymbet, Aiyrtau District, North Kazakhstan Region. The complex is dedicated to the life and work of the outstanding Kazakh educator, orientalist, historian, ethnographer, and traveler Chokan Chingisovich Valikhanov.

The museum covers an area of 1,663 square meters and consists of the museum building itself and the adjoining historical site - the Syrymbet Estate. The Syrymbet Estate is an object of historical and architectural significance, built for Shokan Valikhanov's grandmother, Aiganym. It is located about 4 kilometers southeast of the village of Syrymbet and spans more than 4,030 square meters.

This architectural complex was built in the first half of the 19th century - specifically, on April 30, 1824 - by personal order of Emperor Alexander I and under the direction of the Governor-General of Western Siberia, P. Kapcevic. The primary purpose of the construction was to strengthen the authority of the Middle Zhuz sultans and to facilitate closer integration with the Russian administrative system. Aiganym’s estate was conceived as a unified ensemble that included a residential house, a guest house, a school, a mosque, a mill, a bathhouse, utility buildings, and accommodations for service staff.

After the October Revolution of 1917, the estate fell into neglect and began to deteriorate by the mid-20th century. Only in 1991, as part of the 150th anniversary celebration of Chokan Valikhanov, did restoration work begin. Following a complete reconstruction in 1993, the historical complex was officially incorporated into the Shokan Valikhanov Historical and Ethnographic Museum in Syrymbet.

The museum’s exhibition comprehensively covers the scientific and creative legacy of Shokan Valikhanov, his research on the history and culture of Central Asian peoples, his travel routes, ethnographic notes, and his family genealogy. The museum's collection includes historical documents, household items, and ethnographic artifacts from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The complex is also a unique architectural monument that recreates the historical atmosphere of the era in which Shokan Valikhanov lived.

Today, the Syrymbet Historical and Ethnographic Museum functions as a center for research, cultural education, and tourism. Every year, hundreds of domestic and international tourists, researchers, and students visit to learn more about the legacy of the great Kazakh thinker - Shokan Valikhanov. The museum also hosts academic conferences, historical and cultural expeditions, and ethnographic research projects.
