Regional Sports Museum named after Kazhymukan

The Kazhymukan Munaitpasov Sports Museum is a specialized cultural and educational institution dedicated to the history of Kazakhstani sports. The museum is aimed at promoting the achievements of national sports and immortalizing the life paths of athletes who have become the pride of the nation. It is located in the Ordabasy district of Turkistan region, not far from the mausoleum of the renowned wrestler Kazhymukan Munaitpasov. The institution is designed to comprehensively present the life and sporting legacy of one of the key figures in the history of Kazakh sports - Kazhymukan.

The official opening of the museum took place in 1986 and was timed to coincide with the 115th anniversary of the birth of the great wrestler, who became the first professional athlete to bring global fame to the Kazakh people. The initiative to establish the museum was aimed at reviving historical memory and strengthening the spirit of national sports. Over time, the museum complex was expanded to include the mausoleum of Kazhymukan, a monument, a recreational area, and an exhibition hall.

The museum's exposition is divided into several main thematic sections:

Life and Sports Career of Kazhymukan Munaitpasov - This section presents materials on the wrestler’s childhood and youth, his outstanding victories in Russia, Europe, and Asia, as well as his assistance to the people during the First and Second World Wars. The exhibit includes photographs, personal belongings, wrestling uniforms, medals, and awards.

Development of Kazakhstani Sports - This section gathers materials that reflect the evolution of sports in the period of Kazakhstan’s independence, as well as the achievements of Kazakhstani athletes on the international stage, including at the Olympic Games and world championships.

National Pride in Sports - Here, the biographies and accomplishments of outstanding Kazakh athletes from various eras are presented, highlighting their contributions to national identity. Special attention is given to the development of wrestling schools following Kazhymukan’s legacy and the athletes who played a significant role in that progress.

Traditional Kazakh Sports - This exhibition introduces visitors to the history, development, and current state of traditional Kazakh sports such as kures (Kazakh wrestling), audaryspak (horseback wrestling), kokpar, tenge ilu (coin picking from horseback), and others.

The Kazhymukan Munaitpasov Sports Museum occupies a special place in Kazakhstan’s cultural and spiritual landscape. It not only acquaints visitors with the life of the great wrestler but also promotes the history of national sports in general.
