Description
The Narkobyz is one of the ancient bowed string instruments of the Kazakh people. This particular piece was used in the “Workers’ Youth” Theater named after Mukan Tulebayev and served as a portable instrument during expeditions or campaigns.
It is carved from zhygyl wood (a type of tamarisk). The structure resembles a shell: the lower body is rounded and covered with animal hide. The top includes a curved neck, headstock, and two tuning pegs. It has two strings made of horsehair, and a bridge placed in the middle to support them. The sound of the Narkobyz is deep and haunting, often used in ritual, ceremonial, or military contexts.
